Original left-side lid used as reference for reverse engineering

Project Overview

A classic 1960s motorcycle required replacement side case lids after the original right-side lid was missing and no replacement parts were available. Using the remaining left-side lid as a reference, the component was captured using high-precision 3D scanning and digitally reconstructed to recreate the missing geometry and produce a matching pair of replacement lids.

Challenge

The original right-side lid was missing and no replacement component was available. The challenge was to accurately recreate the missing part from the existing left-side lid while ensuring proper symmetry, fitment and surface quality suitable for a classic motorcycle restoration.

Solution

The original lid was captured using blue-laser 3D scanning to record the complete internal and external geometry. The scan data was processed in CAD software and mirrored to generate the missing right-side lid, after which the digital models were refined and prepared for manufacturing.

Result

The resulting digital model provided a reliable reference for designing custom bull bars with accurate mounting points and geometry. This allowed faster development and improved fitment of the final product.
